Snow Ice Cream

As a child, I always looked forward to a heavy snow during the winter. We would always go to the back of the yard where the snow was the deepest and get good, clean snow to make snow ice cream. This is an old-fashioned recipe that was very popular during the depression, when families could not afford the store-bought ice cream. Many of our modern children have never had the benefit of trying it. I'm hoping to restore an old tradition.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups half-and-half cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/8 teaspoon salt

2 quarts clean fresh snow (I think we've all heard the joke about NOT eating yellow snow; look out for the dogs)

chocolate syrup

Directions:

Pour the cream, vanilla, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Whisk together and add salt. Quickly stir in snow until the mixture reaches ice cream consistency. Spoon into bowls, add chocolate syrup, and enjoy.
